Catholic schools and parishes in the Virgin Islands introduced the Bishop’s Appeal 2012 on the first weekend of Lent, February 25-26. This year’s campaign focuses on the theme “Working Together for the Kingdom of God.”
The Bishop’s Appeal is an annual fundraising campaign designed to meet major needs within the diocese. Through this campaign, the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands generates vital financial support for the needy served by Catholic Charities of the Virgin Islands, the hundreds of children who attend the four Catholic schools in the territory, and evangelization projects throughout the diocese.
Brochures are available at all parishes. All money raised stays in the territory.
Catholic Charities
The Bishop’s Appeal 2012 is committed to helping Catholic Charities of the Virgin Islands (CCVI) bring help and hope to those who are less fortunate and have nowhere else to turn. CCVI has provided emergency food, clothing, shelter, counseling, medical, psychological and social services to our homeless and needy.
Catholic Schools
The Bishop’s Appeal 2012 will provide valuable assistance to our four Catholic schools. Tuition alone does not completely cover the actual costs of educating a student. The Bishop’s Appeal 2012 will help by providing funds for tuition assistance, textbooks, science lab supplies and other programs for the students. With this support, nearly 900 students this year alone will receive a strong foundation for a lifetime of faith, achievement and service.
Evangelization
The campaign’s evangelization and outreach efforts include the operation and maintenance of Light of Christ Retreat Center on St. Croix, the home of many seminars for youth, deacons, music ministers, teachers, etc. The appeal also assists with Catholic media, specifically, the operation of the two local Catholic television stations and the publication of the monthly Catholic Islander. It likewise supports outreaches by the diocesan Office for Youth Ministries. In addition, it also assists in the formation of future priests for the diocese and other needs within the diocese.
